Since the establishment of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology the office of the Controller of Examinations is maintaining its activities with significant rules and disciplines.
The office of the Controller of Examinations of AUST follows the three concepts Justice, Security and service as follows:
The Activities of the Office of the Controller of Examinations
- To conduct all Examinations and Examination related works of Bachelor degree programs based on the AUST Rules and Regulations.
- To prepare and distribute all types of Academic Certificates, Transcripts, Semester Grade Sheets and other documents related to the Office of the Controller of Examinations and approved by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor.
- To prepare different types of reports related to results of examination and publish, if necessary.
- To preserve all types of documents related to examinations, like Tabulation Sheets, Mark Sheets, used answer scripts for a specific period of time, and other necessary documents.
- To communicate with all other offices, departments and schools regarding examinations and other examination related activities.
- To perform other activities related to Examinations ordered by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor.
All activities related to the Office of the Controller of Examinations have been arranged and distributed among the Officers and Staffs, so that a complete performance of the Office of the Controller of Examinations is ensured.
Type of Examinations
The examinations of every theoretical course will be arranged twice in a semester:
- The Semester Midterm Examinations
- The Semester Final Examinations
- The Semester Midterm Examination and the Semester Final Examination are conducted and arranged centrally from the Office of the Controller of Examinations.
- The Semester Midterm Examination is held in the 8th week of the semester after immediate Midterm Break.
- The Midterm Examination is completed within six working days dividing total students in three equal groups.
- The Midterm Examination for three groups is arranged according to the following time duration.

- The Semester Final Examination is held after ending the semester according to the Academic Calendar published at the beginning of the semester from the Office of the Registrar.
- The Semester Final Examination is completed within 16 working days dividing total students in three equal groups so that students can get minimum two days gap between two consecutive examination dates.
Requirements to Attend in the Midterm and the Final Examination
- All students are required 70% class attendance in each course to sit for the Semester Midterm and the Final Examination.
- Students should maintain semester payment schedule as per deadline provided by the Office of the Registrar to be eligible to attend both the Midterm and the Final Examinations.
- The students must have valid identity card to sit for the examinations.
- Students must enter the examination hall within 25 minutes after the starting time of Midterm Examination.
- Students must enter the examination hall within 30 minutes after the starting time of Final Examination.
- The students will have the sitting arrangement in due time before the examinations.
- Beside Examination halls, there will be examinations with special arrangement for the sick students approved by the Medical Officer, AUST. The sick students need to fill up a sick bed application form available in the AUST Medical for sick bed examination.
Rules against Committing any Offence in the Examination Room
For committing any type of offence in the Examination hall, the students are punished according to the specific rules and regulations of the University. This punishment may be from warning to expulsion for good. Detailed punishment is stated in the cover page of the answer script.
Marks Distribution of the Courses
The marks distribution of all theoretical courses of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology is as follows:

Program Duration
The duration of all Engineering Programs and the Bachelor of Business Administration is 4 years, comprising two semesters in each year, whereas the duration of Bachelor of Architecture is 5 years, comprising two semesters in each year.
Limit of Completion of Bachelor Degree Program
All 4-years degree programs at AUST require completion of all degree requirements within a maximum period of 7 years, 14 semesters, while 5-years degree programs require completion of all degree requirements within a maximum period of 8 years, 16 semesters. Failure to complete all degree requirements within the given time frame may disqualify a student from continuation of his/her study at AUST.
Duration of Examinations
The duration of Midterm Examination is one hour and the duration of the Semester Final Examination is 2:30 hours (Two hours and thirty minutes).
Publication of Result
- After approval of the marks of each course by the Controller of Examinations, the students can have the course wise result through IUMS under condition of completing all dues up to the running semester.
- After approving the results of all courses by the Controller of Examinations, the promotion lists are prepared and sent to the respective Departments/School. The students can have the detailed results with GPA and CGPA through IUMS under condition of completing the dues up to the running semester.
Grading System for Semester Final Examinations
The letter grades and corresponding grade points will be given for theoretical and practical courses in accordance with the marks obtained by the students according to the following grading system:

Promotion Criteria
A student will be promoted to the next higher semester under the following conditions:
- A student obtaining no ‘F’ grade in any theoretical or practical/sessional course in the current semester examination will be promoted to the next higher semester if he/she does not have any other cause of not promotion approved by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor.
- A student obtaining the grade ‘F’ in a maximum of 2 courses, due to failed or absent but not expelled, in the current semester examination will be promoted to the next higher semester with carry in the courses having letter grade ‘F’ if the cumulative number of courses having grade ‘F’ up to his/her current semester does not exceed the highest allowable limit of 4. Students should clear their backlog course(s) of previous semesters during the regular semester final examinations.
- The student having CGPA below 2.200 in the 1st year 2nd semester or higher will not be promoted to the next higher semester though he/she fulfills the promotion criteria mentioned above. In this case, the student will have to re-register for all the courses or selected courses of the current semester, so that his/her CGPA increases up to 2.200 or above.
- If the number of theoretical courses having grade ‘F’ in the current semester exceeds the highest limit of 2, or if the cumulative number of theoretical courses having grade ‘F’ up to the current semester exceeds the highest limit of 4, or if the student has letter grade ‘F’ in any sessional course of the current semester, or if the student is expelled in two theoretical courses in the current semester, the student will not be promoted to the next higher semester.
- In such cases, the student must need to re-register in the subsequent semester registering the failed courses and try to bring down the number of failed courses including the carry course(s) within the allowable limit of promotion to the next semester.
- A non-promoted student, due to failing in one sessional course in the current semester, has an opportunity to overcome the failed sessional course consulting with the respective Head of the Departments/School and the course teacher to pass the sessional course for promotion to the next higher semester.
Examination to Improve Letter Grade
- Students having letter grade less than ‘A-’ can sit for Improvement Examination to improve letter grade up to ‘A-’ cancelling the previous letter grade under improvement examination criteria.
- The Improvement Examination will be held at the same time of Semester Final Examination with the same question.
- Students can apply for Improvement Examination through IUMS with required Improvement Examination fee within the deadline published from the Office of the Controller of Examinations. The students are requested to read the warning carefully showed in IUMS before applying.
- A student can appear in the Improvement Examination in a maximum of two courses in a specific semester under improvement criteria.
- A student of 4-years degree program can sit for Improvement Examination in a maximum of 08 courses during his/her studentship, whereas a student of 5-years degree program can sit for Improvement Examination in a maximum of 10 courses during his/her studentship under improvement criteria.
- Students cannot sit for Improvement Examination in any course after completing 4th/5th year 2nd semester with one or more carry courses.

Examination for Failed Course(s)
- The students who promote to the higher semester with one or more failed courses of previous semester can appear in the Carryover Examination to overcome the letter grade ‘F’.
- The Carryover Examination will be held during the same time of Semester Final Examination with the same question.
- Students can apply for Carryover Examination through IUMS with required Carryover Examination fee within the deadline published from the Office of the Controller of Examinations.

Graduation
After completion of all degree requirements, the graduation lists of all Programs are prepared and published taking approval of the Vice Chancellor subject to approval of the Academic Council and the Syndicate. The graduation notice is published on the notice board in the Office of the Controller of Examinations, the respective Department/School and the AUST website.
Documents Issued from the Office of the Controller of Examinations
The Office of the Controller of Examinations issues all Examination documents like Semester Grade Sheet, Certificate, Transcript etc. within 07 working days after confirming payment.
Semester Grade Sheet
- The Office of the Controller of Examinations issues Semester Grade Sheet of each semester. The Semester Grade Sheet includes the student’s updated CGPA and GPA of current semester including separate results of all courses of current semester.
- Students may apply through IUMS for Semester Grade Sheet paying required fee. Students will have a message to deliver Semester Grade Sheet after completing payment.
Provisional Certificate and Academic Transcript
- After notifying graduation, the students can apply for Provisional Certificate and Academic Transcript through IUMS. Students must have the Testimonial from the respective Departments/School, and the Character Certificate from the Office of the Proctor before applying for Provisional Certificate and Academic Transcript.
- Students will have a message to deliver Provisional Certificate and Academic Transcript after completing payment.
Original Certificate
- Original Certificate will be delivered after Convocation. If any student urgently needs Original Certificate before Convocation, the student must submit a manual application to the Vice Chancellor with proper documents where it is needed. The students will have to apply through IUMS at the same time to get confirmation for payment.
- The Office of the Controller of Examinations will approve online application to pay required Certificate fee after having a manual application approved by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor.
- Any document received by other than the document holder must submit an authorized letter under authorization criteria. Authorized letter is available in the student corner of AUST website.
CGPA for Graduation
The minimum CGPA for degree award is 2.200 on a scale of 4.000. The maximum attainable CGPA is 4.000. The CGPA for enrollment in the Dean’s List of Honor is 3.750 or above.
Awards for Outstanding Results
- The graduate who secures the highest CGPA in a specific semester among all programs is awarded a certificate named ‘KHAN BAHADUR AHSANULLAH PADAK’ with a gold medal.
- The graduates, included in the Dean’s List of Honor, may have a Dean’s Certificate applying to the Vice Chancellor through the Head of the Departments/School.
Scholarship Award
- The 5% of the total students of each semester Department/School securing highest GPA in the semester examination under merit criteria are awarded 100% scholarship on the semester’s tuition fee.
- The next 5% of the total students of each semester of each Department/School securing highest GPA in the semester examination under merit criteria are awarded 50% scholarship on the semester’s tuition fee.
