The Readymade Garment (RMG) industry stands as the cornerstone of Bangladesh's economic prosperity, constituting over 80 percent of the nation's export revenue. With its exponential growth since the 1980s, reaching a staggering $45 billion in 2022, the demand for textile graduates has surged. Textile education has thus become a focal point in Bangladesh's academic landscape.
Pioneering this educational endeavor, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) blazed a trail by introducing the Bachelor of Science in Textile Technology program in 1998, later upgraded to Bachelor of Science in Textile Engineering. Approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC), this program embodies a mission to attain national and international recognition, catering to the global textile industry's needs and societal welfare.
Embracing innovation, sustainability now intertwines with the curriculum through collaborative efforts with renowned institutions like The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and the Technical University of Dresden. The establishment of the Chair for Sustainability and Textile Innovation Management signifies a forward-looking approach, fostering the development of sustainable textile engineering solutions.
With state-of-the-art laboratories and a faculty comprising 26 dedicated members boasting diverse academic backgrounds and industry expertise, the department ensures a holistic educational experience. Collaborations with textile industries and research institutes enrich students' learning journeys, facilitating research endeavors, industrial training, and design projects.
The department's legacy shines through its alumni network of over 2400 graduates, making notable contributions across various sectors, both nationally and internationally. Their achievements underscore the department's commitment to excellence and its pivotal role in shaping the future of textile education in the era of globalization.
I believe that the Department of Textile Engineering will play a very remarkable role in upgrading textile education which will be compatible with the fourth industrial revolution. In closing, I extend heartfelt gratitude to the department's faculty, officials, and staff for their unwavering dedication and I have confidence in their continued efforts to propel textile education to new heights.
