Textile and clothing industry is the single source of growth in Bangladesh's rapidly developing economy. Exports of textile and garments are the principal source of foreign exchange earnings. In the financial year 2016-2017, the RMG sector generated USD 28.14 billion which was 80.7% of the total earnings in exports and 12.36% of GDP. The Readymade garment (RMG) industry is playing the most vital role in the current economic growth of Bangladesh by contributing more than 80 percent to the country's total exports. RMG sector is expanding rapidly since the 1980s and the business came to nearly $35 billion in 2019 placing a high demand of textile graduates. Textile education is, therefore, very popular in Bangladesh. The Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) was the first private university in Bangladesh to introduce Bachelor of Science in Textile Engineering program in 1998. This program is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh and has already been accredited by the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE) of The Institution of Engineers (IEB), Bangladesh.
The Mission of the program is to be a premier textile engineering program with national and international recognition to serve the needs of the global textile industry and humanity. This program also plans to create the scope of textile research to advance knowledge of textile science and engineering. The curriculum of the program is designed according to the outcome-based education to get the recognition of educational qualifications and professional competence of our graduates by The Washington Accord of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA). Bachelor of Science in Textile Engineering program recently incorporates sustainability in various courses through a project of curriculum development with The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) to innovate and disseminate new textile engineering and technology that can enhance the wellbeing and sustainability of society. Currently, one course on sustainability has been developed and introduced in the curriculum and a few more sustainability-related courses are being designed with the collaboration of the Technical University of Dresden, United Nation University and GIZ with Engelbert Strauss to establish a new Chair for Sustainability and Innovation Management in the Department of Textile Engineering, AUST.
The department has already set up nine laboratories with sophisticated machines and equipment’s to cope with modern textile education. At the same time, the department maintains close and collaborative relationships with the textile and apparel industries and various research institutes which allows students to pursue conventionally and applied researches, intern experiences, and design projects.
At present, the department is functioned by a total number of 29 full-time dedicated faculty members. All faculty members have an excellent academic background and hand inexperience on textiles at the industry level. Most of them possess postgraduate degrees from different reputed national and overseas universities. Besides, many distinguished faculty members from the country’s top public universities and experts from reputed textile industries and research institutes are teaching regularly as invited lecturers.
Around 2500 students have already graduated from this department; and the graduates are performing with a reputation in many textile and apparel industries, various government offices, commercial organizations such as banks, buying houses, sourcing, testing and certification companies as well as in different universities as faculty members. A notable number of AUST Textile graduates are also regularly being enrolled in reputed national and foreign universities for postgraduate study and research.
I believe that the Department of Textile Engineering will play a very remarkable role to upgrade the textile education which will be compatible with the era of globalization. Finally, I thank all the teachers, officials and staffs of the department for their hard work and dedication.
