The Firefly Team from Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) has achieved a significant milestone by being recognized as a Youth-Led Action Research Winner under the program Youth-Led Action Research on Green and Digital Transformation.
The recognition was conferred at the Closing & Certificate Ceremony, organized and awarded by ActionAid Bangladesh and SustainLaunch Labs. The award acknowledges innovative, youth-driven research initiatives that address pressing challenges related to sustainability, climate resilience, and digital transformation.

Firefly is an autonomous firefighting drone project developed by undergraduate students of the Mechanical and Production Engineering department (ME) at AUST. The project focuses on leveraging aerial robotics and smart systems to support firefighting and disaster response, particularly in high-risk and hard-to-reach environments.
Through the Youth-Led Action Research program, the Firefly Team received a competitive grant from ActionAid Bangladesh, which enabled them to further develop, pilot, and evaluate their prototype under controlled field conditions.
As part of the program, the team successfully conducted prototype piloting, generating valuable performance data and practical insights. These findings were later consolidated into a research article, marking an important academic contribution alongside the project’s applied impact.

The initiative reflects AUST students’ growing engagement in research-driven innovation with strong social relevance, aligning engineering excellence with sustainable development goals.
Being featured as a Youth-Led Action Research Winner highlights the Firefly Team’s dedication to combining technical innovation with environmental and social responsibility. The achievement underscores AUST’s commitment to nurturing young researchers capable of developing solutions that contribute to green and digital transformation at both national and global levels.
With the successful completion of the program, the Firefly Team aims to further refine their system, expand testing, and explore future collaborations in disaster management and emergency response technologies.
This achievement stands as a proud moment for AUST, showcasing how student-led research and innovation can create meaningful impact beyond the classroom.
