Seminar on "Recent Trends in Bridge Engineering: Bangladesh Experience"


Structural engineering is one of the most important branch of Civil Engineering (CE), and has been given proper emphasis in our CE curriculum as such. As a part of regular knowledge dissemination and sharing, a seminar on "Recent Trends in Bridge Engineering: Bangladesh Experience" was arranged by the department of CE, AUST and sponsored by Crown Cement on 13 January, 2016 at Dr. M. H. Khan Auditorium, AUST.  The speakers were Prof. Dr. Tahsin Reza Hossain, Department of CE, BUET; Prof. Dr. A. F. M. Saiful Amin, Department of CE, BUET and Prof. Dr. Anwarul Mustafa, Department of CE, AUST. The seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Md. Mahmudur Rahman, Head, Department of CE.   Prof. Dr. M. H. Khan, Advisor and Founder VC, AUST was the chief guest and Dr. A. M. M Safiullah, Vice Chancellor, AUST was present as special guest in the seminar. Faculties from BUET and AUST, guests from outside  and final year students of CE department attended the seminar.

The Keynote speaker, Dr. Tahsin Reza Hossain, Professor of Department of CE, BUET deliveried speech on Bridges of Bangladesh: Design, Construction and Challenges; Speaker Prof. Dr. A.F.M. Saiful Amin, Professor of Department of CE, BUET gave speech on Construction & Maintenance of Bridges in Bangladesh: In the Past, Present & Future; Speaker Prof. Dr. Md. Anwarul Mustafa, Professor of CE, AUST gave speech on Present trends and status of Arch Bridges in Bangladesh. After the presentations, an open discussion was held where students and guests presented their questions to the respective speakers.

The seminar focused mainly on historical development in bridge engineering and the recent trends in this sector. The speakers shared their valuable experience related to the design and construction of bridges and also focused on the upcoming challenges to the future engineers. Some ongoing bridge design projects were discussed in depth by the speakers. The program concluded with a crest giving ceremony and vote of thanks by the Chairman of the seminar, Professor Dr. Mahmudur Rahman, Head of Department of CE, AUST.
