Md. Sadman Chowdhury Apurba Receives “Honorable Mention” at Tamayoz International Award for BArch Thesis on Revitalizing Khatunganj

Md. Sadman Chowdhury Apurba, a graduate of Batch 41 from the Department of Architecture at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST), has been awarded an “Honorable Mention” at the prestigious Tamayoz International Award for his thesis, "Reviving the Traditional Trade Culture of Khatunganj, Chattogram." This year, Tamayoz Award competition attracted 587 submissions from 125 universities across 37 countries, celebrating exceptional creativity, innovation and critical thinking in architectural design.

Sadman’s thesis focuses on adaptive reuse strategies for the historic trading hub of Khatunganj, addressing urban challenges such as traffic congestion, waterlogging and economic stagnation. Key proposals include pedestrianizing streets, optimizing loading and unloading zones, restoring canals to revitalize water transport and introducing modular warehouse designs inspired by traditional architecture.

Balancing heritage preservation with modern functionality, the project aims to enhance operational efficiency, attract tourism and revitalize the local economy. It provides a sustainable urban renewal model, blending modern infrastructure with cultural preservation and serves as a blueprint for revitalizing historic trade centers worldwide.

The thesis was guided by esteemed studio teachers: Dr. Farida Nilufar, Dr. Maher Niger, Ar. Zishan Fuad Chowdhury and Ar. Ishrat Momtaz Badhan, with supervision from Dr. Ayasha Siddiqua.
