Field Trip to the Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant (DSTP)

On February 23, 2025, the AUST Civil Engineering Society (ACES) arranged a full-day educational trip to the Dasherkandi sewage treatment plant (DSTP), the largest in South Asia, for second-semester fourth-year Civil Engineering students from Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST). The main aim of this excursion was to offer students hands-on insight into water treatment procedures and operations, thereby enriching their theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Accompanied by several faculty members from the Department of Civil Engineering, a total of 80 Civil Engineering students participated in this educational excursion to Dasherkandi sewage treatment plant. The visit was facilitated through the cooperation and assistance of the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA).

Upon reaching the DSTP, the students received a warm reception from important figures responsible for operating and overseeing the plant. Among them were Momtajur Rahman, the Executive Engineer at Dasherkandi STP, DWASA, and Rajib Ahmmed, serving as the Sub Divisional Engineer at DWASA.

Prior to starting the tour, the students received an extensive briefing that covered the historical context and operational methods of the Dasherkandi STP. This briefing enabled the students to understand the broader importance of the plant in ensuring the safe release of treated wastewater into the adjacent water body.

The presentation also illuminated the different phases of the sewage treatment process, the machinery employed, and the quality assurance protocols implemented to ensure the safe release of treated wastewater. Students were encouraged to interact with the speakers, posing questions to enhance their comprehension of the topic. In a gesture of gratitude for the warm welcome, valuable insights, and hospitality provided by the staff at the Dasherkandi sewage treatment plant (DSTP), the AUST Civil Engineering Society (ACES) presented crests to Momtajur Rahman, the Executive Engineer at Dasherkandi STP, DWASA.

The excursion to the Dasherkandi sewage treatment plant (DSTP) was a valuable and instructive journey for the students involved, providing them with a chance to connect theoretical learning with practical applications in Civil Engineering and sewage treatment.
