A two-day workshop on “Constructive Alignment” conducted by the department of MPE

A two-day workshop titled “Workshop on Constructive Alignment” was organized by the Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering (MPE) at AUST premises. The workshop took place on May 2nd and 3rd, 2023, in the departmental classroom (R#8A03), and was exclusively attended by faculty members from both the IPE and ME programs. The workshop aimed to enhance the understanding of constructive alignment, a theory that aligns learning outcomes, assessments, and teaching strategies to create an effective learning environment.

The workshop commenced on May 2nd, 2023, with a keynote address by Prof. Dr. Mazharul Islam, Head of the Department of MPE. The keynote speech highlighted the importance of constructive alignment and its implications in the engineering education of the IPE and ME programs. On the first day of the workshop, three modules were covered, which included introduction to OBE, constructive alignment, and learning outcomes. Each session was interactive and included hands-on activity where participants actively engaged in discussions, and shared their experiences and insights on the implementation of constructive alignment in their respective courses. The first day of the workshop concluded at approximately 4:45 PM, after commencing at 1:50 PM.

On May 3rd, 2023, the second day of the workshop, two modules were covered, which included teaching and learning (T&L) and assessments. These modules also included hands-on activities where participants designed T&L and assessment activities based on the constructive alignment approach for their respective course outcomes. The aim was to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills required to effectively implement constructive alignment. With a vote of thanks from the Head of the department, the second and final day of the workshop concluded at approximately 4:30 PM.

The workshop was well-received by the faculties who found it helpful in understanding the basic concepts of outcome-based education, the OBE implementation framework at AUST, and applying constructive alignment in their courses from an OBE perspective. Overall, the workshop on constructive alignment conducted by the department of MPE was a resounding success. It provided an excellent opportunity for participants especially newly joined faculties to enhance their knowledge and skills on constructive alignment and its implications in their courses.
