On 16th February 2023, the students of 4th year, 2nd semester of IPE program of the MPE Department along with their faculty members visited the Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL) in Chattogram. It is the only petroleum refinery in Bangladesh which is located in the port city of Chattogram. Founded in 1968, ERL has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tons whereas Bangladesh has a yearly requirement of 4.5 million tons. ERL is responsible for refining imported crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other petroleum products. Managed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Government of Bangladesh, ERL operates as a subsidiary of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), employing around 1,000 skilled engineers and technicians. The company has invested heavily in modernizing its equipment and facilities and implementing various environmental and safety measures.
ERL imports crude oil mainly from the middle east and refines it into various petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. The company has also explored new business opportunities, such as exporting petroleum products to neighboring countries. Despite global oil price fluctuations and competition from other refineries in the region, ERL is committed to delivering high-quality products and services to its customers while upholding the highest standards of safety and environmental responsibility.
The students were firmly briefed about process management, safety management, resource management, and quality management. They visited the ERL’s extraction process under the supervision of experienced engineers.
Overall, ERL’s significant contributions to economy of Bangladesh and commitment to excellence in all aspects of its operations to make it a critical player in the country’s energy sector.
