Ergonomic FlexMove Cabinet: A Smarter Approach to Everyday Accessibility

The Ergonomic FlexMove Cabinet is an innovative, motorized storage solution developed as part of the Product Design and Development Sessional (IPE 3112) at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology. Designed with a strong focus on ergonomics and user comfort, this cabinet redefines how people interact with storage systems in everyday environments.

Unlike conventional cabinets that often require users to bend or strain to access lower compartments, the FlexMove Cabinet integrates intelligent motion mechanisms to bring stored items within easy reach. The system utilizes motor driven rack and pinion mechanisms along with lead screws to ensure smooth and controlled drawer movement. Two motors are dedicated to pulling out the second and bottom-most drawers, while another set of motors operates a scissor lift mechanism ; functioning as a hinge system to raise inner drawers to an ergonomic height.

The cabinet is primarily constructed from Mild Steel (MS) for strength and durability, while the scissor lift mechanism is made of Stainless Steel (SS) to enhance performance and corrosion resistance. Although the initial prototype uses metal, the design is adaptable and can be manufactured using alternative materials such as plywood or plastic, depending on cost, weight, and application requirements.

Mobility is another key feature, with integrated wheels allowing the cabinet to be easily repositioned. The system is powered by a battery and controlled through user-friendly switches and a controller, ensuring convenient operation.

This versatile design is suitable for a wide range of environments, including homes, offices, laboratories, hospitals, and old-age care facilities. By minimizing the need for bending and improving accessibility, the Ergonomic FlexMove Cabinet enhances comfort and usability for people of all ages.

This project was developed by Jannat-E-Sabanoor, Pushpita Arpon Annon, Mir Al Shariar, and Imran Arefin Tanim under the supervision of Ms. Afia Ahsan. It reflects a practical application of engineering design principles to create a solution that prioritizes human well-being, adaptability, and functional innovation.
