AUST has agreed to work on a ICRC funded project titled “Design and prototyping of alternatives to Polypropylene bags”


One of the leading educational institutes of Bangladesh, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) has signed a contract with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to work on a project titled “Design and prototyping of alternatives to Polypropylene bags”, in collaboration also with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food Programme (WFP). Polypropylene bags are generally used for transporting various food and non-food items. But polypropylene can be harmful to the environment due to its non-biodegradable nature, non-eco-friendly processing, and most significantly the tendency of micro-particle leakage. The ICRC, UNHCR and WFP were looking for more sustainable options and made a call for solutions. AUST has accepted the call and proposed a solution based on modified jute products which then got acceptance. The research team working on this project includes Dr. Mohammad Tajul Islam (Associate Professor), and Md. Arif Mahmud (Assistant Professor) from the Textile Engineering Department of AUST. Prof. Dr. Lal Mohan Baral (Head of the Textile Engineering Department) will act as the coordinator for the project. The University has always been known as one of the best in terms of the quality of education to mould the future researchers of this country. And with this project, the University is playing a key role in providing sustainable and environment friendly solutions to one of the most sought problems currently existing for mankind. In addition, they are also showing the diversified application of jute, the golden fiber, to the world which has always been a matter of pride for us.
