Overview

Laboratories and classrooms are at the core of academic and research activities at AUST. Safe practices in these spaces are essential to protect students, faculty, staff, and equipment.

Lab Safety Responsibilities

• Follow posted lab rules and safety guidelines.
• Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (lab coats, goggles, gloves, masks as required).
• Report unsafe conditions, accidents, or near-misses immediately to the Lab Supervisor.
• Do not work alone in labs outside official hours without prior approval.

Incident and Accident Management Plans

• Each department must have an updated Lab Incident & Accident Management Plan.
• Plans are designed to comply with BAETE accreditation criteria.
• They include:
• Steps to follow in case of chemical spills, burns, or electrical hazards.
• Immediate medical response protocols.
• Incident reporting procedure and documentation forms.

Safety Posters & Banners

To raise awareness, safety banners and posters are posted across labs and workshops.

Classroom Safety Protocols

• Keep aisles and exits clear at all times.
• Do not block emergency doors or fire extinguishers.
• Electrical equipment must be used with care (no overloaded sockets).
• Faculty are encouraged to remind students of evacuation routes at the start of each semester.

These guides provide checklists, dos & don’ts, and emergency procedures tailored for specific laboratories.

Emergency Preparedness in Labs

• Fire extinguishers and first aid kits are installed in all labs.
• Students are encouraged to participate in safety training programs organized by CSTF and FSCD.
